Man, OJ killed two people and was hated less than this guy. Kind of says something doesn't it. The things we get irate about are sometimes so ridiculous.

Man, OJ killed two people and was hated less than this guy. Not by me. But you're right. Celebrity allows murderer OJ, cheater Lance and pedophile Michael to still be worshiped despite the horrible things they did. But you're right, in that trio Lance is definitely the lesser of the evils.

Just me, I guess.
Twas just making a point how we tend to really hate cheaters. Kill someone and we'll make sure your sportscasting career is ruined, but get caught cheating and you're dead to us.

And may I just add...FUCK OPRAH for providing a national forum for Armstrong and other ne'er-do-wells to tearfully recant their past disgraceful behavior while begging for forgiveness from the American public.

I'll forgive her if she's as tough on him as on that Million Little Pieces liar. But she probably won't be. I wonder if Barbara Walters is pissed that Oprah grabbed her confession franchise. Used to be Barbara was the go-to gal.

After seeing the amount of hatred and condemnation directed toward Lance, I can't help feel that we as a country sure do employ a selective approach to whom we direct our scorn.
I mean, none of this has any bearing on our lives.
Yet those directly responsible for lying and deceiving us on a daily basis continue to add zeroes to their bank account balances while taking further steps to systematically fuck us over.
You know who fucking owes us an apology?
The Dubya administration ("Sorry for the two wars, the thousands of dead American soldiers, and for lying about those non-existent WMD's") Wall Street ("Sorry about that whole crashing the economy thing.") Banks ("What Wall Street said. Thanks for the bailouts!")
Does Sammy Sosa or Mark Maguire or Manny Whatshisface owe me an apology? Of course not, even suggesting such a thing sounds stupid, right?
This whole Lance debacle should just be ignored. Otherwise, in two years time, we'll be celebrating the comeback and redemption of The Biker Douchebag, who once again will be making millions more than any of us will ever see.
I mean, that's what this whole Oprah thing is about. It's all just one step in a pre-planned PR campaign to keep Lance from ever really having to feel any of the consequences of his actions.
To him, he's just taking some minor slings and arrows for the greater good. He probably sees himself as a modern-day Job, who one day wakes up to find that his friends, business partners, and sponsors have all turned their back on an otherwise "honorable man". But he will remain strong, martyr that he is, and ride out the storm no matter how long it takes to redeem himself.
In the end, all he'll do is lower the bar on acceptable human behavior. Instead of shrinking away in shame, never to be seen again, he'll essentially be saying to impressionable ears that its okay to cheat because, if you get caught, all you have to do is go on Oprah, or Piers Morgan, and pretend to be sorry while still trying to rationalize your behavior.
Why is the CEO of Bank of America not on Oprah, begging for our forgiveness? Why does he get a pass? Is it because we feel helpless to bring about any change and that guys like that will never have to face the consequences of their actions?
Ah, I give up.

I think you're seeing the outrage precisely because of the cases you cite. The banks fuck us, we bail them out and they use the money to give themselves nice bonuses for fucking up, and there's seemingly nothing anyone can do. One of the reasons Chuck Hagel is being challenged by his fellow republicans over the Secretary of Defense position is because he was RIGHT about opposing the Iraq war.
If you haven't already, check out the column that DA linked in the post above yours. It's a good sum-up.
But back to my point -- when one of these guys does get caught and have to face the music maybe the fury is due to the frustration we feel about all the others who get away with gaming the system. Lance doesn't help his case by being an arrogant douchebag in his denials, ruining other people's lives, and then "coming clean" only when he's facing the prospect of losing his money in civil suits and possible criminal prosecution (ironically, it was announced today that his confession may lead to reinstatement of federal charges that were previously dismissed. Oops).
As I said before, OJ is worse, Michael Jackson was worse, and fuck Roger Clemens and all those other cheaters. Lance is a case where we get the satisfaction of seeing someone finally being held accountable for his actions. So yeah, maybe some pent-up emotions makes it more important than it is. But as I stated in starting this thread -- Fuck Lance Armstrong.

Was anyone else outraged to learn that one of Lance's "corporate" sponsors is The United States Post Office? The same place that has to cut jobs and mail delivery because it can't turn a profit (and yeah I know its all wrapped up in a bunch of congressional pension bullshit as well)-- the SAME place that may need federal money to survive..... The same place that continues to deliver someone else's mail to me on a daily basis?
But yet, they have a "sponsorship" department, they are worried about branding themselves, so they have some guy or gal in a suit rifling through potential sports personalities, music festivals, and charity walks to spend money on branding themselves!
As if anyone would forget they exist or how to use them.
Talk about outrage- what a fucking waste of money.
Oh yeah, and I agree with all of the above. I'm trying not to pay attention on purpose.

Funny you should mention that, Boots? I remember thinking that the USPS was an odd sponsor, too. I mean, what were they hoping to gain from the association, I wonder? Were they hoping that Lance's many admirers would buy their stamps from the USPS as opposed to...anyone else?

Yeah, just smacks of uselessness, like Coke trying to curb their image as a product that leads to obesity. Duh.
