Threads get started here for individual films sometimes, but what about one where we talk about what we've seen?
I've been seeing the "Looper" previews for months, and it looked like another one of those predictable action films with a cop-out, wrap-up-the-loose-ends finale. We saw it this past weekend and it was quite enjoyable, with an ending you didn't see coming for once.
Saw "The Master" a couple of weekends back and wanted my money back. A friend saw it this weekend and demanded his money back. And got it.
Looking forward to a few we haven't gotten to just yet. Want to see "Arbitrage." Did see "Moonlight Kingdom" a couple of months ago and liked it even though many people I know felt it was trite and pretentious.
When you get out to a film (or catch something new on DVD), please toss in a quick write-up here (avoid spoilers!). You people seem to have reasonably good taste despite the fact that you allow me to post here.
Eye thenk ewe.

Good to know about "The Master." We were going to see it this weekend. I'm looking forward "Lincoln" with DDL.
I really enjoyed "Lawless"--Guy Pearce was wonderfully maniacal and Tom Hardy was fantastic. I have a fascination with the '30s, too, and I thought it did a good job of capturing the period. It was kind of a waste of Gary Oldman, though. He was in it for about 10 minutes, I think.

Loved lawless. Tom Hardy is amazing.

"The Master" was a turd. No one wants to believe it when you tell them either.

"The Master" was a turd. No one wants to believe it when you tell them either. The only reason I can fathom for the glowing reviews is the clear anti-Scientology premise of the "plot." That doesn't make it a good movie.

I was gonna pass on The Master anyways...I kind of don't get the "brilliance" of PT Anderson to begin with, but I know that's just me.

I loved -- and still love -- "Boogie Nights." His first one was OK, too. Everything since, I've disliked intensely.

Argo 7/10 Great performances from Alan Arkin and Bryan Cranston. Everybody else does their job, Affleck maybe plays his role a little too subdued, and the casting is remarkable as every actor/actress actually bears an eerie resemblance to the real-life person they're playing.
Looper 7/10 For once, an ending you don't see coming a mile away. Joseph Gordon-Levitt must have had work done because he didn't look like that in his last movie. It's like the whole bottom half of his face is different. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Having said that, great performance. He's officially become a mainstream star after almost a decade of great indie performances.
End Of Watch 4/10 Totally predictable. Mildly enjoyable. Training Day Part Two.
On video: Moonrise Kingdom 8.5/10 Great cast, inspired performances from everyone, a movie with a huge heart. I stayed away initially because I feared it might be too "hipster-approved" and those movies always let me down.
On TV: Adventureland 2/10
Just pointless in every way. Kristen Stewart confirms her inability to act her way out of a wet paper bag. Jesse Eisenberg's presence is completely wasted. And, fuck, it has that d-bag Ryan Reynolds in it.

Darren, "Argo" sounds intriguing to me, cool that you saw it.
I'll also give "Moonrise Kingdom" a shot too, soon. Sometimes Mr. Twee gets on my Darjeeling nerves, but wow, I love "Tenenbaums".

My sister worked on "Argo" - spent a couple of weeks in Isanbul. She loved it. She's now working on "Wolverine". Three months in Australia, a month in Japan.
I want her life.
