"The Rebel In Me" is one of the best things he's ever done. And he didn't even put it on the album; just a single B-side.

On CD changer: 1) Bonus disc to "Some Girls" deluxe. It is so good! no kidding. I thought I already had the masters of some of those songs, but the mixes on those are just stellar.

Saw it 4 times. Shrine. Anaheim. 2 nights at the Wiltern. Damn. Incredibly jealous. Despite being a huge Bowie fan for over 30 years now, I've never seen him live. When I first started at Album Network in August '97, I put in my name for Bowie tickets at the Gibson (then Uni) Amp, figuring there was no way I'd score because I was so low on the totem pole. A few days later I saw that Kenny Wayne Shepherd was playing the Roxy that night, and made my first-ever approach to a label rep seeking free tickets. Said rep couldn't have been more gracious, and I had all I needed a week before the show. Then, two days before the show, the rock editor told me a pair of Bowie tickets had fallen through to my level...and did I want them? Of course! But, after taking them, I got to thinking--did I really want to piss off the first label rep I personally asked for a favor? Not a good idea at a publication dependent upon the labels for advertising revenue, so I sucked it up and passed the Bowie tix along to a buddy of mine in the production department, figuring I'd catch Bowie the next time around. Well, while the Kenny Wayne show was fantastic, that next time around for Bowie never quite materialized...for which I kick myself to this today. Funny thing is, if I told this story to the label rep, who remains a friend to this day (through FB, at least), he'd undoubtedly castigate me as a complete dumbass. Sigh.

It's called "Postcards: From the Mountain" by Chinese composer Bright Sheng, played by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. I'm also writing the 7am newscast (and procrastinating here).

Good Bowie cover story focusing on the Ziggy era in the new Rolling Stone. Sidebar, unfortunately, notes that Bowie hasn't been onstage in six years and has no intention of going back.

Anyone know if it's true he turned down $1 million to play Coachella?

Seems like an awfully low bid for Coachella.

He probably made more at the US Festival.

As I've said - saw that tour 4X and it was PERFECT. I think there's got to be a problem in - being the ultimate rock chameleon - how to do it AGAIN. God bless him. I'd love another record as the last 3 or so have been fantastic. But, if he's done. Be done, Mr. Jones.

Did he tour America again after that tour he did with Moby? That was pretty sensational. I could not believe that Moby had the gall to follow Bowie onstage. Last time I saw that many people head for the exits following "the opening act" was when "new wave sensations" the Kings decided to follow Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Pretenders, Rockpile, etc. at the Toronto Heatwave Festival. But I'm sure Bowie didn't care; he just went home earlier. We stayed and watched a little bit of Moby's rock set. It looked like a Saturday Night Live skit. Saw Bowie every tour from "Diamond Dogs" on.
Seriously, folks, $1 million was the amount that was being spread around in those rumors. That seems to be the going rate, although that's also reportedly what they offered the Replacements. Pretty sure that's what the Stooges got. But the Smiths were offered $5 million, if I remember correctly. One could certainly argue that Bowie was worth more – so long as he didn't do the "Glass Spider" show. I wonder what they paid Madonna.
Also pretty sure that $1 million was the top rate at the US Festival, which was a lot of money at the time. I remember this because that's what both the Clash and Van Halen got for headlining their respective days. Entertainment Tonight did a short segment on that amount of money being paid to a rock group. I love Joe Strummer but poor Joe went into a long diatribe about how it was a lot of money, and how it would help them fight the good fight, etc., etc. They interviewed Roth next and he said "It seems like a lot of money but after we pay off the roadies and all the involved expenses, the four of us will only have enough money left to buy our own islands in the Caribbean." That made me laugh and I figured that Diamond Dave had trumped my hero Joe on that particular day.

You're close, DylanDog, and you're correct, Duck. Bowie did get 1 million for the US Festival. Steve Wozniak wanted him added at the last minute, Bowie was touring europe at the time, they had to charter two planes to fly his crew and gear over for the 1 show, and he got $1 million. However, Van Halen had a "most favored nations" clause where they had to be paid a significant amount more than anyone else -- so they got bumped up to $1.5 million. So between Bowie's fee, Bowie's equipment and VanHalen's raise, it cost Woz about $2 million total to add bowie to the bill. I got this from the horse's mouth.
