Really? I'd always heard SRV turned down the invitation to tour. Never knew he got as far as rehearsing with them. You are a wealth of info. Dost thou have the bootleg of to which you are referring?

I don't. Listened to the bootleg in the store at the time, it seemed lackluster, I passed on spending the $50 for two discs. It was a high-quality soundboard, however, so let me cast around and see if I can find it amongst my people. My history on it is vague. Rehearsals definitely happened. Can't recall if Bowie fired SRV for turning up wasted or if SRV refused to clean up enough to be reliable and walked away. I still kick myself for never seeing SRV.

I remember that SRV turned it down because Bowie was only paying scale, which was something like 300 bucks a gig.

The way I heard it was that SRV played totally by ear and couldn't hack the slightly-more-complex-than-blues arrangements.
Interesting how many versions there are. I'm sure Wiki has the real scoop. ;D

I still kick myself for never seeing SRV. Same here--I was young when he died, but not that young. Now, he's in my top 3 guitar players of all time.

right now I've just got Letterman on in the background, but at work today at the wine store we listened to ABC Beatles -commercial-free wall-to-wall Beatles...rarities, the singles in German, and lots of later stage demos...plus the regular jams.. it makes work so much better..

And the Reality tour was So. Fucking. Awesome. Saw it 4 times. Shrine. Anaheim. 2 nights at the Wiltern. Damn. Incredibly jealous. Despite being a huge Bowie fan for over 30 years now, I've never seen him live. When I first started at Album Network in August '97, I put in my name for Bowie tickets at the Gibson (then Uni) Amp, figuring there was no way I'd score because I was so low on the totem pole. A few days later I saw that Kenny Wayne Shepherd was playing the Roxy that night, and made my first-ever approach to a label rep seeking free tickets. Said rep couldn't have been more gracious, and I had all I needed a week before the show. Then, two days before the show, the rock editor told me a pair of Bowie tickets had fallen through to my level...and did I want them? Of course! But, after taking them, I got to thinking--did I really want to piss off the first label rep I personally asked for a favor? Not a good idea at a publication dependent upon the labels for advertising revenue, so I sucked it up and passed the Bowie tix along to a buddy of mine in the production department, figuring I'd catch Bowie the next time around. Well, while the Kenny Wayne show was fantastic, that next time around for Bowie never quite materialized...for which I kick myself to this today. Funny thing is, if I told this story to the label rep, who remains a friend to this day (through FB, at least), he'd undoubtedly castigate me as a complete dumbass. Sigh.

Best part about one of the Shrine shows was that we sat behind June Lockhart, her daughter and granddaughter.

Man, I've been listening to New Model Army's Ghost Of Cain and thinking how f'ing underrated this record is.
This tune alone just absolutely kicks my ass:

Pogo's account of the SRV/Bowie split is the one I heard at the time. I think Bowie's people have tried to make it sound over the years like he was fired by Bowie. Dead men can't dispute.

Not as lackluster as I remember, and I googled it and apparently SRV left the Bowie tour to pursue his own music. But I do recall there being bad blood.
