It was kind of fascinating how the Daily Show segued from a commercial featuring live chickens to promote some chicken sandwich at a fast food chain, right to a segment about RIDICULOUS people defending uh, cock-boxing.
By which I mean the vicious bloodsport of cockfighting- where they used to inject the roosters with amphetamines and attach razors to their claws for a fight to the death, and still do south of the border- oh, now it's made cutesy by calling it "rooster-boxing" because they attach cutesy pink "boxing gloves" to the roosters, so that makes it okay. To make animals fight for human entertainment.
Look, I eat chicken, all the time. I wish there would be a tremendous crackdown on how these animals are cultivated and kept. My dad went off chicken completely after seeing how they're maltreated and farmed. It's horrendous. Rooster-fights for human entertainment is another thing entirely. Cutesy pink boxing gloves. So fucking awful, as if we weren't awful enough as a species. Sorry, you like to see roosters fight to the death? You are a fucking awful person.
Yet I still eat chicken, because I'm a six-foot tall giant ape (almost) that neeeds to eat to survive. Fucked up either way. OR IS IT? Maybe our poultry industry could have some regulation and humane standards, instead of keeping them caged their whole lives, injecting them with hormones, etc, etc. Sorry for the rant.

Ps. Why did I put this in "Entertainment"?

Its okay Merc- I loathe animal fighting (and racing for that matter)- its so entitled and not good stewardship of this precious resource of food and life. Yuck.
That being said I eat meat too and I know just what you are saying- can't think about it sometimes.
Sometimes I think we're all going to hell for not doing a better job with the gifts the earth and mother nature give us.

As for how the "food industry" treat the animals they kill, it literally makes me ill. Of course, even if they treated them like freakin' gods up until the hatchet falls, the fact that the hatchet has to fall at all seems even more barbaric at that point. I tells ya, if I had to kill my own food, I would be the most militant, annoying vegan you ever met. I wouldn't be for long, though, as I suspect I would die of starvation.

Gave up meat at the first of the year. Kept fish on the table but limit it to once a week. I feel great-honestly, I can tell a huge difference.

What do you eat? Tofu? I tried that, but I started growing tits and hardly ever left the house.

I do eat tofu but not every meal. Lots of pasta, lots of veggies. I dunno,I'm old. I've eaten lots of great shit in my life and I'm kinda enjoying working and exploring within these boundaries. Ask me in a year how I feel hahaha. I will say it was a 6 second video of chicks being macerated that threw me right off the meat train.

We've been trying to go meatless at least twice a week at dinner ( lunch and breakfast are easy ) - I know what you are saying about boundaries- its been fun to have to figure out fun ways to eat seitan (no not Satan) and whipping up innovative new veggie burgers.
Meat I think I could live without- cheese on the other hand - not so much. I know a lot of people who have gone "dairy free" and swear they look and feel better. I dunno- its all a mystery.

After being a chicken and fish guy for the last twenty five years or so, I have gone to, as an experiment, a veg diet for the last two months or so.. tofu marinated in tamari, ginger and rice vinegar, the mysterious -tempeh-.. homemade ginger carrots; salads for days and vinaigrettes.

I actually quite like tempeh but I know both it and tofu can be texturally challenging to folks. If you're thinking about going veg I suggest a few weeks of dining out so you can see the various ways things can be prepared. Bad tofu is just like bad anything else

I've grown weary of food. I've eaten nearly everything in my life, from fast-food to sushi and every type of meat/veggie/fruit/etc. that I can. I'm simply tired of food and use it now just to stay alive. My trips to California from time to time have the highlight of an In-n-Out Burger visit built in. Didn't care for them when I lived there, always hit it upon arrival.
That said, I recently made a trip to upstate NY and ate at a small inn with the most amazing Yankee pot roast I've ever tasted in my life. I've been furiously googling recipes, but none appear to do anything like this place did. I plan to email the inn this week and get some tips -- they likely won't give the recipe -- but I'd like to know how big a cut they use, how long they slow-cook it, etc. I'm not a big beef guy, but every bite was a mouth orgasm.
The upside of being sick of food is that a salad tastes as good as pizza. I hope I can keep that up.

It's interesting you say that Danny, I've been finding the same thing, and I'm a total cook and a foodie at heart, but its all so "meh, been there, done that" . When I do come across something amazing, it's all that more satisfying. Living here in Chicago, I have ample opportunity to eat some pretty good food. Rick Bayless opened this taco stand in Macy's, at the mall,(yes I just typed that) and I'll be damned if its not the best Mexican food EVER. I mean its Rick Bayless. The steak taco is like crack. I actually go out of my way now to go to "the mall". www.fronterafresco.com/

What do you marinate in? Asian-y stuff or can you go all rosemary/garlic/ Italiano? I've always liked tofu - I actually like the bean curdy texture in soups and deep fried- its always been in Asian preparations though. I'll try the grilling and report back with snaps.
