I miss being six and watching this show. Sometimes I think my crazy creative self was totally fueled by the psychedelic era - I was a kid so no drugs involved - but the imagery, the imagination, the colors, the whack a doodle plot lines - etc. We should all be thankful we had this in our childhood. It was sort of like growing up in an adult's fantasy- land. Everything a melodrama set to music.

I have a theory, which isn't terribly profound, that the main reason people take drugs is to return to that period of childhood where everything is kind of a mindfuck. You sort of know what reality is, but you have no idea how to put it all together into something cohesive. It's the only period in life where you truly allow your mind to go free. Allow's not the right word...you don't even have the ability to allow yourself to be in that state. It just is.
As an adult, I find this show to be slightly disturbing, which is a bit disappointing to me. Like I've crossed over to the other side or something. It's the talking flute, in particular, that I find disturbing. Probably a phallic issue I have or summat.

I think the people who made this show were on drugs.

Oh they were totally on drugs. AND I agree watching this as an adult is tres disturbing. I received the full box set for Xmas a few years back and sat down gleefully to watch it with my kid. I like gulped every three minutes and kept looking at my husband with the panicked OMG! look. It was all about drugs.
My kid thought it was stupid and didn't get it- which sort of goes to show "you had to be there" and the moment is forever lost in time.
I loved the magic flute as a kid (analyze that!) and now think its really scary, especially when its in distress. Ugh.

Oddly, I never liked Puffnstufr...I was more of a Banana Splits kid. Though I'm sure that had just as many drug references.....
