I gave up on the idea that anything I do, write, or say on the Internet or on my phone is in any way private, sadly. Years ago. That anything about me is private anymore. Or, for any of us. Sad but true.

Thing is, we're all still huffing on the glue that America is any different from Nazi Germany at this point.
I know that's a horrible thing to say, but do you remember how complacent folks were under Bush? He and Cheney were stripping freedoms left and right under the guise of preventing terrorism after 9/11 and Obama has only furthered that.
Of course, under O, we've the Occupy and Tea Party movements, both neutered attempts at bringing about change.
I can only imagine how much worse it will be five years from now.
The comparison to Nazi Germany may sound extreme, but, to paraphrase a Manic Street Preachers song, if we tolerate this, our children will be next. Inch by inch, certain powers that be are undermining all that is good about America.
And we seem to be quite good at tolerating things. Sure, we bitch and moan for a few days when we hear about it, but then we go right back to sleepwalking.

I don't think it's extreme at all. The conditions were more extreme, and happened it in a shorter period of time, but the comparison isn't.
It's ironic that we were the ones who set up The Geneva Conventions (speaking of Nazi Germany) and then violated them left and right during the Bush years. And we were just fine with that.
This new SC ruling sets up a dangerous precedent, and Eric Holder has just set up an even more dangerous one for the next Attorney General. Hearing Obama try to justify the trapping of phone records (that's what they call it when they're not actually listening to your conversations, but just trapping the numbers you call or who calls you) actually made me nauseous.
I voted for Obama twice, and worked on his campaign, but this demolition of our Constitutional rights was wrong under Bush, and it's still wrong. Putting every other issue aside-- healthcare, jobs, the economy, the President's first priority is to protect and defend The Constitution. If he's not doing that, he's not fulfilling his oath, I don't care who it is.
I'll be interested to see what the ACLU does about this, if anything.

that's my question -- why hasn't this been challenged, or has it and I just missed it?

How could we question it if it was all done in secret? If the gov't (Bush, Obama... anyone) wants us to believe that we need to give up some expectation of privacy considering the existing threats and the technological advances of the day, then let's have that debate. But let's do it beforehand, not after the fact.

Same here. Scary, ain't it? This just summed it up for me. "The irony is that people voted for President Obama hoping for something different," Paul said in a statement. "That's why a lot of people I think are disappointed in the president. They're disappointed in him targeting reporters. There's just a lot to be disappointed about."
