Okay, so the Supreme Court recently ruled that law enforcement no longer needs a warrant to obtain DNA samples. STORYDoes that seem ABSURD to anybody else? I hate to say it, but this seems really dangerous to me. Not because it affects me personally, but because it seems like this decision is just one of many that are being made with the intent to do away with certain basic rights. Granted, this will help move things along on future episodes of CSI when the cops wanna get a DNA sample from an uncooperative suspect.

Yeah, DannyA brought this up in another thread, can't remember which one, and I'm still scratching my head.
I get the basic gathering evidence thing, I mean we think nothing of fingerprints and photos, and at one point that was all "new", wonder if there was a backlash about civil liberties when photography was invented and then used to track criminals.
I mean, if you aren't doing anything wrong you should have nothing to fear, in theory. But we all know that theory isn't reality.

If the gov't can demand that all the telecoms hand over info on all calls and digital communications, have access to our electronic medical records, have cameras and satellites and drones and whatnot to track our movements 24/7, then why should this be any different?
Where there's been opening for common sense allowances for the reality of today's world, they've just been using a crowbar to pry their way into our privacy. But where do we draw the line when we know it leaves us vulnerable to those who mean us harm?

Yesterday Graham was saying that he's not sure if bloggers deserve First Amendment protection...
Freedom of speech, search and seizure, cruel and unusual punishment, equal protection and privacy... eh, who cares?
But by god, we must protect the guns!

It scares the hell out of me, also because it violates our Fourth Amendment rights. We have been watching this happen since The Patriot Act. At this point, I'd rather live in a country where you're certain your rights are being violated. The appearance that we have any civil liberties left is what's really deceptive. And we have a Constitutional lawyer as our president. I agree with the quote in the article that this is Bush's Fourth term. I say this with a heavy heart.
