Sexy London '60's: The mystery of Pauline Boty

It is said that the relationship between Julie Christie and Dirk Bogard in John Schlesinger’s film Darling was partly based on Boty and Saville’s love affair. Ironically Boty would later herself audition for the role eventually played by Christie.

Freaking great article here in the Guardian about a beautiful and talented young female Pop artist in 60's London, who died tragically young. And the search for her most famous paintings, gone missing.

Pauline Boty was a founder of the British pop art movement and Britain's most notable female pop art painter. She died aged 28 in 1966 and her name has largely been forgotten outside the art world. Now exhibitions at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Mach Schau gallery are set to bring her and her work to a wider audience


Wow.I had no idea of this awesome lady's brief existence and work before today. As an art student in the late 50's, she was part of the "Anti-Uglies", protesting some of the hideous modernist/Brutalist architecture going up in still bombed-out London, she became a face for that campaign. She was an instant and famous beauty, men fell for her left and right. She made pop-art paintings, many of which are missing, especially the one you can see above, about the Profumo affar, called Scandal 63. No one knows where this painting is now, and after her young death, her paintings were almost trashed more than once.

She started an affair with a film/theatre/tv impresario named Savile, and acted in a few BBC dramas. Regrettably, like the US networks at the time, they erased and re-used the tapes.

She was kind of a shining star in early 60's London, as a pop artist and as a beauty. Alas. She found out she was pregnant by Savile at the same time she found she had lymphoma. She refused an abortion, and also refused chemotherapy for fear it would harm the baby. (Her daughter Boty died young too, at 29 of a heroin overdose in 1995.)

Anyway, a fascinating life, and such a beauty. Pauline and a friend were also the ones who picked up Bob Dylan from the airport and put him up in their flat in a crumbling and leaky London mansion. Dylan's first time ever out of the USA. Pauline made him feel at home. But apparently Dylan was meant to briefly do a stage play in London, a walk-on part? (Any Dylan fans here can correct me.) But he was usually too stoned to remember his lines.

Sorry for rambling! I had never known a thing about Pauline Boty before today, and now that I do, I am in love. I myself loved the movie Darling with Julie Christie, a dark mirror of swinging, fash London of the time, then. This girl was the real deal.

(Edit: I wanted the title to be, "the mystery of Pauline's missing paintings", but you can only put so many words in the title. And it IS a mystery. Or, perhaps not..just neglect of the works of an artist who died young. Her paintings were stored in a barn. No one wanted them as fashions moved on, pop art was passé, she was dead. Sad.

What's sort of interesting is how such a topical and interesting painting like Scandal '63 - painted in 1963! by a hot famous beauty.. like, there's people that would pay at least in the low millions for that painting now. Just, no one knows where it is. )

She looks like an amazing, gorgeous spirited girl. I don't know why that writer called the film, "Darling" 'dated'. Of course it's dated, it's from 1966!! But it's also showing the London social scene of three years earlier, which is fascinating. "Darling" made me fall in love with Julie Christie, and if Pauline Boty inspired her character, and that film, well, cool. London had hardly stopped swinging in '66, the film is great for that look, into that scene. I really am fascinated by that time and place.

(I'll leave out the whole part of "Darling" where Julie Christie marries a noble Italian, literally becomes "Princess Diana", and goes mad from loneliness and boredom in her role, wandering an empty palace and going crazy from the loneliness and coldness of her husband. I think what who I'm talking about is pretty clear. )
